It’s not every day that you get to launch a book with Rizzoli. My co-author Evan and I worked tirelessly to finish Do Remember! The Golden Era of NYC Hip-Hop Mixtapes, so we wanted to make sure we celebrated its release with something special. Turns out that Ronnie Fieg, the founder of the Kith brand, was a big fan of the book. Not only did he post about it on his Instagram page and have it stocked in all Kith retail locations, but he offered to throw us a launch party at the newest Kith location in Brooklyn and cover the bill. Wow!
Being that the launch party was going to be in Brooklyn, it was a no-brainer to reach out to the borough’s own Mister Cee to ask him to hold down the turntables. And being that he was also a big supporter of the book and featured inside its pages, he quickly obliged.
The party was a success, with an intimate turnout of our friends, family, industry peers, artists, DJs, our NYU Real World x Rizzoli students, and more—all enjoying the the ambiance of Kith’s newest location, and of course, cocktails and Kith treats. Plus, the room was decorated with Do Remember! books, merch, and custom-designed displays.
And not only did Mister Cee hold it down by playing classic mixtape cuts, he took the time to interview Evan and I about the making of the book and some of our favorite NYC mixtape moments. It was truly an honor. Who would’ve known that less than a year later he would no longer be with us. RIP Mister Cee, thank you for everything. We will uphold your legacy to the fullest every chance we get.
